Description

The Tintamarreweekly French satirical journal, year 1883, 48 x 33 cm., half-leather binding, 42nd year, 8 pp. per week, some foxing. The Tintamarre is a French satirical weekly published between 1843 and 1899. After a first issue on 19 March 1843, The Tintamarre was definitively launched on 2 April following by Jules Lovy and Auguste Commerson, respectively editor-in-chief and director. The title, a colloquial synonym for ‘noise’, was chosen for its resemblance to that of a previous publication by Commerson, Le Tam-Tam. Its subtitle, ‘critique of advertising, satire of puffists’, announced the humorous and impertinent ambition of its columns, where witty and fanciful texts on contemporary literary, artistic and industrial novelties rubbed shoulders with advertisements. Most articles were signed with pen names, Lovy and Commerson sharing, for example, the pseudonym—or rather heteronym—of ‘Joseph Citrouillard’.In 1850, its circulation was 2,300 copies.Co-owner of the journal with Commerson since 1868, Léon Bienvenu, known as Touchatout, became its owner and editor-in-chief in March 1872.During the 1890s, the journal’s publication became intermittent and finally ceased on 31 December 1899, after fifty-nine years of issues and 2,672 numbers published.Despite the rarity of its humorous drawings, The Tintamarre is considered by historian Bertrand Joly as ‘the most direct ancestor of Le Canard enchaîné’.
