Moral and Economic Treatise from 1393

Description

Le Menagier de Paris is a treatise on morality and domestic economy, composed around 1393 by a Parisian bourgeois. This edition, published in 1961, measures 21 x 27 cm and was produced exclusively for the Friends of Crédit Lyonnais by Chavane. It features a slightly faded canvas tapestry box and includes a preface by Pierre Gaxotte along with a modern French translation by Jean-Paul Laurent, totaling 88 pages. A second volume offers a trimmed version of Le Ménagier de Paris, approximately 120 pages long. It also contains a reproduction of a 1550 map of Paris by O. Truschet and G. Hoyau. Written during the Hundred Years' War, the work encompasses moral precepts, historical facts, household management instructions, insights into the consumption of the King, Princes, and city of Paris at the end of the 14th century, gardening advice, horse selection, an extensive cooking treatise, and comprehensive instructions on hawk hunting.
