HERVET (Gentian), Le Sainct, sacré, universel et général Concile de Trente, printed in Rheims by Jean de Foigny; sold in Paris by Nicolas Chesneau, 1566. Full leather binding (heavily worn with some small losses, 11 x 17 cm), containing 4 ff. (table, privilege...) & 279 leaves, followed by 11 leaves of table (last table leaf missing). Subtle small wormholes on the inner margin. Rare edition, translated by Gentian Hervet (1499-1584), a Catholic humanist and canon of Reims since 1561, one of the few French theologians who attended the Council sessions. Censored authors in the Index of prohibited books (pp. 241-269) include names like Théodore de Bèze, Boccace, Calvin, Clément Marot, Luther, Érasme, Rabelais, Robert Estienne, Étienne Dolet, etc.Related Products
