CARACCIOLI LOUIS-ANTOINE MARQUIS de, Lettres interessantes du Pape Clement XIV, published by Lottin le jeune in Paris 1776. 12mo, XXIV, 439 pp., full leather binding (well worn, marbled edges, interior well preserved). These letters, largely composed by Caraccioli himself, aim to provide a philosophical portrait of Clement XIV suitable to the 'enlightened' opinion regarding his role in the suppression of the Jesuits. The collection was not deceiving; it was considered apocryphal upon its release. The letters cover a wide variety of topics, including Italy, piety, natural sciences, solitude, etc. Only the first volume.
