Description

Marie Ange BRAYER Art & ArchitectureCRDP - FRAC centre, Orléans, 2013, 24x28 cm, 303 pp., boards binding under dust-jacketNearly fine copyThe FRAC Centre collection explores the relationship between art and architecture. Through the works of 65 artists, from Dan Graham to Matta-Clark, from Charles Simonds to Kader Attia, from Andreas Gursky to Berdaguer & Péjus, it examines how artistic production from the 1960s to the present has drawn inspiration from architecture. The FRAC Centre collection also includes exemplary public space projects, such as Daniel Buren’s Les Deux Plateaux, as well as works by James Turrell, Vito Acconci, and Tadashi Kawamata. A dozen essays (by B. Blistène, M.-A. Brayer, T. Davila, E. During, P. Ursprung, et al.) provide in-depth insight into these issues, from early 20th-century modernism to architecture-sculpture, from conceptual art to contemporary artistic practices. Following the late avant-gardes of the 1960s–1970s, which challenged the notion of architectural design, artists reconnected with a critical vision of architecture.Photographs, films, drawings, installations appropriate architecture as an archetype, an iconic substratum, a historical reference. From models to full-scale architectural installations, artists engage with architecture as a dimension of utopia, thereby questioning our relationship with the world. The FRAC Centre collection reveals works that reconnect with architecture’s critical capacity. This collection stands as an open field of reflection where art and architecture converge in a shared aspiration to rethink social and political space.
