Description
Three handwritten and signed autograph letters by Nicolas Luc-Olivier MERSON (1846-1920), French painter and illustrator. Born in Paris on May 21, 1846, died November 13, 1920. Son of painter and art critic Charles-Olivier MERSON (1822-1902) and Félicie Joséphine Talbot. Studied under Gustave Adolphe Chassevent-Bacque and Isidore Pils at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. First exhibited at the Salon in 1866, awarded the Prix de Rome for painting in 1869 with 'Le Soldat de Marathon'. First-class medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1875 and gold medal at the World's Fair of 1889. Elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1892. Workshop director at the École des Beaux-Arts from 1905 to 1911. Knight of the Legion of Honor (1881), promoted to Officer (1900). Specialized in religious and historical painting.
