The Charivari, 20th year, from July 1 to December 28, 1851, 25 x 36 cm, hardcover binding (partially unbound), numerous frayed or nearly detached pages, more rarely cut but missing no leaves, however, 54 whole text sheets are missing. Contains 78 plates of drawings by Cham, Gavarni, Durandin, etc. The Charivari was the first illustrated satirical daily newspaper in the world, published from 1832 to 1937. Founded on December 1, 1832, by Charles Philipon as a republican opposition journal against the July Monarchy, it played various roles throughout its history, being sometimes radical, conservative, republican, or anti-clerical. Notable authors included Taxile Delord and Agénor Altaroche, with significant caricaturists including Philipon, Nadar, Gustave Doré, Honoré Daumier, and Henri Rochefort.
