Antoine François Claude (1807-1880), head of French security police 1859-1875, presents an invaluable work combining adventure narrative and historical documentation. Claude pioneered psychological investigation methods: careful trace examination, fingerprinting, witness confrontation, behavioral observation, and judicial anthropometry predating Alphonse Bertillon's systematic approach.
