Description

BENOIT (Jérémie) Philippe-Auguste Hennequin. 1762-1833. Arthena, 1994. Paris, paperback, 4to (28 x 21 cm), 288 pages with 263 illustrations. Comprehensive bibliography, chronology, index. Once a pupil of David, Hennequin was closely involved in the political events of the Revolution. A radically republican painter, he refused to comply with imperial directives. Soon forgotten in France, his memory was preserved in Belgium, particularly in Liège and Tournai. An artist seen as dual, unrecognized in his homeland yet honored in his adopted country, Hennequin's work is meticulously reconstructed here for the first time. From the strictest neoclassicism, he adeptly adapted to a variety of themes such as religion and military painting. A very fine copy. No shipping outside the European Union.
