Paris, LE NOUVEAU PARIS, 1800. Only the second volume of 'Le Nouveau Paris', a work published by Louis-Sébastien Mercier in 1798. It consists of short, independent chapters (anecdotes, portraits, reflections, short stories) depicting Paris during the French Revolution. This six-volume series continues the twelve-volume 'Peintures de Paris' published by Mercier between 1782 and 1788. Mercier wrote extensively for newspapers during the Revolution and initiated his own publication, 'Les annales patriotiques et littéraires', from 1789 to 1796. He uses certain articles to form chapters in 'Le Nouveau Paris', reflecting the profound changes brought about by the Revolution. The first edition was published in Paris without a date, and the preface is dated to the 10th Frimaire Year VII (November 30, 1798). Throughout 271 chapters, Mercier recounts revolutionary events and daily life in Paris, focusing on institutions and notable figures while chronicling conflicts he witnessed during his time in the Convention.
