Philippe-Auguste Hennequin (1762-1833), a pupil of David, was closely involved in the political events of the Revolution. He became a radical republican painter but refused to submit to imperial directives. Quickly forgotten in France, his memory was preserved in Belgium, particularly in Liège and later in Tournai. As a divided artist, little known in his homeland but honored in his adoptive country, Hennequin's work is presented for the first time in its entirety.
