Description

LECLAIR (Anne) [Preface by Jacques Foucart]. Louis-Jacques Durameau (1733-1796) Arthena. Deauville, 2001. Publisher's hardcover binding under illustrated dust jacket, 4to (32 x 24 cm), 352 pages with 319 illustrations including 39 in colour. "A student of Pierre and Carle Vanloo, Durameau (1733-1796) was considered a promising artist by Diderot, who praised his 'fire' and imagination. A religious painter following Deshays, a 'Rembrandtesque' portraitist, he was also a genre draughtsman and observer of Parisian life. Though one of the first of his generation to restore the honour of French history, one of the most eloquent manifestations of Durameau's art remains his talent as a ceiling painter. The originality of this artist, sometimes enigmatic but of multiple talents, merited recovering his true place in the period of mutation of French painting that preceded David's advent." Fine copy. No shipment outside the European Union or to overseas territories.
