MAYER-MICHALON (Isabelle) [Foreword by Jean-Pierre Cuzin.] Charles Meynier: 1763-1832. Arthena, Deauville, 2008. Publisher’s binding in gray cardboard under illustrated dust jacket. Size in-4° (33 x 25 cm), 448 pages with 520 illustrations, 103 of which are in color. Meynier, a devoted student and favorite of François-André Vincent, began his official career with the Prix de Rome in 1789 and continued under the Empire and Restoration with his entries at salons and state commissions. He also worked for prominent private collectors such as Boyer-Fonfrède, Lucien Bonaparte, Marshal Berthier, and Count Schönborn. The historical painter is primarily a masterful draftsman, exploring classical sources for rarely illustrated episodes, with drawings reflecting a deep culture and study of antiquity, confirmed by the significance of his library and print collection. Very fine copy.
