RITTER (Georges). Manuscripts with Paintings of the School of Rouen. Norman Books of Hours. Rouen, Lesstringant; Paris, Picard, 1913. Large quarto, 60 pages with 81 illuminated plates (black and white). Softbound, minor wear to spine. Fine copy. This collection is principally devoted to the remarkable group of manuscripts produced in Rouen in the early 16th century for King Louis XII and his minister, Cardinal Georges d'Amboise, Archbishop of Rouen. Approximately sixty plates were borrowed from these magnificent volumes, with the most interesting ones fully reproduced. The collection continues with paintings adorning the somewhat later Cartulary of the Church of Saint-Maclou in Rouen. The final section presents a selection of Norman Books of Hours, many of which still reflect the manner of the Rouen School artists.
