Description

Georges RITTER. Manuscripts with paintings from the School of Rouen. Books of hours from Normandy. Rouen, Lestringant, Paris, Picard, 1913. Large quarto of 60 pages and 81 plates of illuminations (in black and white). Paperback, minor wear at headbands. A beautiful copy. This collection mainly focuses on the remarkable group of manuscripts created in Rouen during the early 16th century for King Louis XII and his minister, Cardinal Georges d'Amboise, Archbishop of Rouen; about sixty plates were borrowed from these beautiful volumes, of which the most interesting have been fully reproduced. They are accompanied by the paintings adorning the cartulary of the church of Saint-Maclou in Rouen, executed shortly afterward. Finally, in the last part of this collection, we provide a selection of Norman books of hours, most of which still reflect the style of the artists from the Rouen school.
