Ortolan is one of the most important French jurists of the 19th century, despite a chaotic academic career due to his distinctly republican views. He specifically published elements of criminal law frequently mentioned in this catalog, as well as two works on Roman law, first a historical explanation of Justinian’s Institutes and then a history of Roman legislation from its origins to modern legislation.
