NADIN Ma lis Histoire de Condé-sur-Noireau. Jardins ouverts - Jardins secrets. Volumes 1 and 2, Condé-sur-Noireau, Charles Corlet, 1998. 2 volumes in-4° (24 x 32.5 cm), 495 & 518 pp., numerous illustrations in b/w, two strong volumes, hardcover bindings with dust jacket (small tear). A very beautiful copy. "Finally, this is a history of Condé-sur-Noireau from its origins to the year 2000. 'Gardens opened' for the eventful sides rooted in regional, national, or international facts; 'secret gardens', as this monumental study - for the first time - gives significant attention to the everyday life of the people of Condé throughout the ages. The author relies on unpublished documents, never exploited before, and offers a fresh look at periods already explored by his predecessors. The nineteenth century of Condé has never been presented in such a complete or lively manner. The industrial boom, gigantic Saint-Gilles fairs, heated controversies reminiscent of Cyrano in the newspapers, often amusing news stories. Then, the conflict of 1870 is viewed from a local perspective. The 'Great War' is treated similarly. The interwar period witnesses the birth of our grandparents - who will find much of their past here. After the terrible upheavals of 1939-1945 - extensively evoked here - Condé then rebuilds itself, slowly taking on the face we know today: the exciting challenge of diversified businesses within a searching Europe."
