WILL, Ernest; LARCHÉ, François. Iraq al-Amir: die Burg von Tobias Hyrcan. Paris: orientalistische Buchhandlung Paul Geuthner, 1991. 31 x 48 cm, 2 volumes (text and plates). Cardboard binding with minor edge tear, otherwise very fine condition. 413 & 100 plates, very fresh. Comprehensive archaeological study of the unique Hellenistic fortress of Iraq al-Amir located in Jordan's Amman province, approximately 15 km southwest of Wadi Al Seer in the Jordan Valley. The construction dates to the 2nd century BC and is associated with Hyrcanos of the Tobiad family. Richly decorated with high reliefs and friezes, the architectural ensemble demonstrates significant Hellenistic and Persian artistic influences, representing important evidence of the diverse cultural contacts at the borders of the Lagid and Seleucid kingdoms.
