William Harvey's Exercitationes de Generatione Animalium, published in Amsterdam by Joannem Ravesteynium in 1651. It measures 80 x 137 mm and contains [28], 388, [3] pages. The binding is full leather with worn corners, missing top cap, and several leaves exhibit light halos. This work features a striking engraved frontispiece depicting Jupiter opening an egg from which creation springs, and it signifies a scientific revolution. Harvey, known for his discovery of blood circulation, presents a comprehensive rethinking of life itself, positing the bold theory that all life arises from an egg — ex ovo omnia. It represents the first truly new theory of generation since Antiquity and establishes the epigenetic principle: the embryo gradually builds itself rather than being preformed. This treatise is not merely a historical milestone but a cornerstone of modern embryology, combining rarity, iconographic beauty, and exceptional scientific significance.
