He returned to France around 1800 and subsequently served as publicist, professor of Jurisprudence at the University of Paris, attaché to the Ministry of Foreign Relations, political correspondent of Napoleon during his campaigns, naturalist in the imperial treasury; peer of France after the 1830 revolution.
