Alain Roy's work on Gérard de Lairesse (1640-1711), published in Paris by Arthena in 1992, is a cloth-bound volume under a dust jacket, strong large 4°, 574 pages, with slightly bumped corners, featuring color and black & white illustrations, an index, and bibliography. The book includes a catalogue of this artist's works. Known as the 'Dutch Poussin', Lairesse was trained in the Franco-Italian milieu of Bertholet Flémal. Settled in Amsterdam, he created highly intellectual art, referencing ancient culture and allegory, primarily for wealthy merchants, literati, or Prince of Orange-Nassau, the future William III. A prolific painter, talented draughtsman, and one of the greatest engravers of his time, he was wholly devoted to his art. This work sheds light on a fundamental period in Dutch art history, marking the transition from the 17th to the 18th century, thus serving as a crucial source for understanding European art of that era. A very fine copy. No shipping outside the European Union.
