RAPHAEL, Maurice. The Festival. Before another night of long knives falls. Éditions du Scorpion, 1950. Octavo, 219 pages, paperback. Two leaves shortened at top margins, including title page. First edition. Maurice Raphaël is a pseudonym of Victor Maurice Élie Jean Le Page (1918–1977), French writer and master of noir slang prose. After World War II, Le Page began writing under this pen name, with his first works published by Raymond Guerin at Éditions du Scorpion directed by Jean d'Halluin. His prose style echoes Céline with characteristic slang and dark, pessimistic formulas reflecting societal critique. Le Page later became known for detective novels and crime fiction published in Série Noire and related collections, many exploring the underworld of Corsica and Marseille.
