HERVET (Gentian) The Holy, sacred, universal and general Council of Trent. Printed in Rheims by Jean de Foigny; sold in Paris at Nicolas Chesneau, 1566. Full leather binding (heavily scuffed with some small gaps), 11 × 17 cm. 4 preliminary leaves (table, privilege, etc.) and 279 sheets, followed by 11 index sheets (the final index sheet is missing). Discrete wormholes along inner margins. Rare edition in the translation of Gentian HERVET (1499-1584), Catholic humanist appointed canon of Reims in 1561 and one of the few French theologians who attended the Council sessions. Notable are the censored authors listed in the Index of Prohibited Books (pp. 241-269), including Théodore de Bèze, Boccaccio, Calvin, Clément Marot, Luther, Erasmus, Rabelais, Robert Estienne, and Étienne Dolet.
