Beautiful small full calf binding, boards framed with triple gilt fillets, worn corners, minor loss to lower spine crown. 36 & 73 pp. Malebranche's philosophy having penetrated China, where it was reportedly appreciated, the Bishop of Rosalie, apostolic vicar in that country, engaged him to compose this dialogue between a Christian philosopher and a Chinese philosopher on God's existence. The Trévoux journalists, shocked by his supposition that the Chinese were imbued with atheism, reproached him for favoring Spinozism through his system of intelligible extension that he admitted in God.
