Description
Set of 4 handwritten cards and autographed letter from André Magre, prominent French man of letters, novelist, playwright, and art critic (1867–1958). Documents related to his presidency of the Société des Gens de Lettres (SGDL), which he led during two separate terms (1908–1910 and 1913–1916). During his tenure, he organized the Society's jubilee in July 1913 and established the Widows' Denier fund for writers' widows. Magre was instrumental in defending French writers' international rights and co-founded the Société des Romanciers Français in 1907. Elected to the French Academy in 1924, he served as permanent secretary from 1946. Includes typewritten letter addressed to poet Fernand Gregh.
