Autograph manuscript letter signed by Gabriel de LAUTREC (1867–1938), French novelist, poet, translator and humorist. Cousin of painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, disciple of Alphonse Allais. LAUTREC appeared in Paris in 1889 as an elegant vicomte, frequenting Latin Quarter literary brasseries and the Chat Noir cabaret. Licensed in letters, he published Poèmes en prose (1898), gaining entry to literary circles. He held salon at Passy, receiving Jean Lorrain, Willy, Jean de Tinan, Alfred Jarry, Oscar Wilde and Paul Verlaine. Co-founder of the Académie de l'humour (1930) with Curnonsky and Courteline. Translator of Mark Twain's tales with essay on humor. Latin professor in Marseille; unsuccessful candidate to the French Academy (1923), awarded Legion of Honor (1936).
