Historical documentation concerning MAGRE's presidency of the Société des gens de lettres (French Writers' Society). MAGRE (born Mâcon, 9 July 1867; died Paris, 27 August 1958) was a prominent French novelist, dramatist, art critic, literary and historical scholar, and Dreyfusard intellectual. He served as SGDL president in 1908-1910 and again 1913-1916, implementing major initiatives including the 1913 jubilee celebration and founding the 'Denier des Veuves' charitable fund for writers' widows. MAGRE was instrumental in defending French authors' rights internationally, founded the Société des romanciers et conteurs français in 1907 with contemporaries including HARAUCOURT, ROSNY, and Maurice LEBLANC, and received the Académie française's Prix Vitet (1910). Elected to the Académie française in 1924, he became its perpetual secretary in 1946. A decorated Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, he maintained residence at 82 rue du Ranelagh, Paris 16e.
