Smith Bradley's work, published by Robert Laffont in 1965, is a folio measuring 295 pages. It includes an introduction to Japan's history by Marius B. Jansen and an introduction to Japanese art by Nagatake Asano, the director of the National Museum of Tokyo. The book features a color illustrated dust jacket (with minor tears) and is bound in brown cloth with the title in golden Japanese ideograms. It contains significant color illustrations both within and outside the text. The content is divided into 10 periods, from the archaic era to the Meiji period, each preceded by a historical and artistic chronology.
