Friend of Flaubert, Maupassant, and Céard. Author of Pluralité des Races Humaines (1858). Participated in scientific expeditions to find the Nile sources (1856) and polar exploration from Svalbard and Jan Mayen (1892). Maupassant dedicated the short story La Mère sauvage to him in 1884.
