Charles Henri Georges POUCHET (1833-1894), son of naturalist Félix Archimède POUCHET, was a French naturalist and anatomist. Professor of comparative anatomy at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris and director of the maritime laboratory in Concarneau. Friend of Flaubert, Guy de Maupassant, and Céard; acquainted with Zola. Specialized in comparative anatomy of fish and cetaceans. Early defender of polygenism, a racialist theory positing multiple human lineages. Published Pluralité des Races Humaines (1858; English translation 1864). Participated in Nile source expedition (1856) and polar expedition from Svalbard and Jan Mayen (1892). Guy de Maupassant dedicated the novella La Mère sauvage to him (1884). Very rare.
