BALZAC, H. de. Code des gens honnêtes. Paris: Librairie Nouvelle, 1855, 92 x 150 mm; 128 pp.; half-leather binding, spine missing. A note in the preface indicates that “This work by Mr. H. de Balzac was done in collaboration with Mr. Horace Raisson.” This work, one of Balzac's earliest, was first published by Barba in 1825. It already reveals the author's hatred for a society corrupted by money: various chapters address petty thefts – handkerchiefs, watches, bags, purses, pins; thefts in shops, cafes, restaurants…; various scams; and more or less forced contributions such as calls to the purse in the house of the Lord… Vicaire I,178
