Handsomely bound in well-preserved percaline (except for the worn binding of the 13th volume), gilt edges, original covers retained (except for the first and last volumes). Occasional foxing. Published between 1894 and 1913. Contains approximately 1,000 biographies, notices, autographs, and portraits, illustrated with engravings by H. Brauer, Ch. Clément, L. Jarraud, D. Quesnel, A. Prunaire, H. Sorensen, and P. Leyat. Features aristocrats and heads of state (popes, monarchs, presidents, heirs), ministers, diplomats, clergy, judiciary, military, members of the Académie française and Institut de France, physicians, politicians, writers, artists, sculptors, engravers, composers, and theater figures.
