Robert Browning was a prolific English poet and playwright best known for his mastering of the dramatic monologue, which made him one of the foremost Victorian poets. Thematically his poetry was renowned for its irony, characterization, social commentary and historical setting, yet somewhat notorious for its extensive use of challenging vocabulary and syntax.
