Handwritten and signed autograph letter from Gabriel de Lautrec (1867-1938), French novelist, poet, translator, and humorist. Cousin of painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, he was a disciple of Alphonse Allais and prominent figure in Parisian literary circles. De Lautrec appeared in Paris in 1889 as an elegant viscount, frequented Latin Quarter brasseries and Montmartre cabarets, meeting literary giants including Allais, Jarry, Wilde, and Verlaine. He published Prose poems (1898), establishing himself in literary society. He hosted a renowned salon in Passy and co-founded the Academy of Humor in 1930 with Curnonsky and Courteline. A Latin professor at Marseille, he translated Mark Twain's tales. Though unsuccessful in his 1923 candidacy for the French Academy, he received the Legion of Honor in 1936.
