The work of Van Dongen focuses on the image of women, with faces made up and distorted by electric light serving as his trademark. Through his use of color, Van Dongen remains the artificer of Fauvism. His travels in Morocco, Spain, and Egypt in the early 1910s allow him to reinvent a form of Orientalism. However, Paris remains the main subject of his painting: the lively popular spirit and bohemian life of Montmartre (where he meets Picasso and Derain) and Montparnasse, before and after the 1914 war, of which he is one of the main animators.
