Description
Sophie Join-Lambert, Anne Leclair, Denis Coekelberghs explore the life of Joseph-Benoît Suvée (1743-1807), an artist moving between Bruges, Rome, and Paris. Published by Arthena in 2017, this hardbound volume of 440 pages measures 330 x 250 x 35 mm and features color and black-and-white illustrations. Minor wear at corners and caps. Suvée's academic journey began in Bruges and advanced in Paris. A recipient of the Grand Prix of the Academy in 1771, he displayed remarkable curiosity for ancient sites during his time in Rome. He produced numerous admirable drawings and returned to Paris in 1779, where he was received at the Royal Academy. His works exhibited from 1779 to 1796 reflect a commitment to neoclassicism, gaining particular success with historical and religious canvases as well as portraits, most notably those of his fellow prisoners during the Terror. In 1801, he became director of the Académie de France in Rome, guiding a new generation of artists including Ingres. A distinguished draftsman and innovative painter, Suvée is a key figure of the Enlightenment era.
