Original edition by Arsène Houssaye, published in Paris by Dentu in 1880. Large in-folio format (320 x 440 mm), comprising (4)-VIII-176 pages with 63 black and sanguine engravings, including 36 full-page plates. Spine detached, two boards loose (half morocco with corner reinforcements, double gilt fillets, rubbed edges), gilt edges. Nine frontispieces, eleven portraits of Molière, fifteen of Armande Béjart, four of Madeleine Molière, twelve scenes from Molière’s plays, twelve photogravures. Minor marginal tear in one page; otherwise a fine copy requiring binding restoration. Shipping outside the European Union is charged extra.
