Iraq al Amir is a village in Jordan, in the Amman Governorate. The village is located in the Jordan Valley, about 15 kilometres southwest of the town of Wadi Al Seer (greater Amman area). The village is home to a singular archaeological monument: the ‘castle’ of Iraq al Amir, whose construction dates to the 2nd century BCE and is linked to Hyrcanus, a member of the Tobiad family. The decoration of this complex is remarkable: inspired by Hellenistic and Persian art, the high-reliefs and friezes constitute a leading testimony to the multiple influences in the architecture of the Hellenistic period at the borders of the Ptolemaic and Seleucid empires.
