(Joseph-Louis-Elzear) Historical explanation of the Institutes of Emperor Justinian, containing the text, side-by-side translation, and explanations below each paragraph. Paris, Plon, 1883, vol. I: XXVII, 820 pp.; vol. II: XIV & 768 pp.; vol. III: 949 pp., paperback, untrimmed (covers in original state, spine split in the first volume). Ortolan is one of the most important French jurists of the 19th century, despite a chaotic academic career due to his distinct republican views. He notably published elements of criminal law frequently featured in this catalog, as well as two works on Roman law, starting with a historical explanation of Justinian's Institutes and then a history of Roman legislation from its origins to modern legislation.
