The philosophy of Father Malebranche reached China and was reportedly appreciated. M. de Lionne, bishop of Rosalie and apostolic vicar there, encouraged him to compose his 'Entretiens'. Trévoux journalists criticized him for implying that the Chinese were steeped in atheism and accused him of favoring Spinozism through his system of intelligible extension in God.
