Numerous pages with frayed or loose edges, rarely cut but with no missing content; however, 54 complete text sheets are missing. 78 out-of-text plates featuring drawings by Cham, Gavarni, Durandin, and others. Charivari is a French newspaper and the world's first daily illustrated satirical publication, appearing from 1832 to 1937. Founded December 1, 1832 by Charles Philipon as a republican opposition journal against the July Monarchy, this satirical newspaper with entertainment vocation established itself throughout its history as variously radical, conservative, republican, or even anticlerical. Its most important writers included Taxile Delord and Agenore Altaroche; its most prominent caricaturists included Philipon, Nadar, Gustave Doré, Honoré Daumier, Henri Rochefort, Cham, and Gavarni.
