From Lannemezan to the Baronnies

• This canton offers the particularity of extending over two different geographical environments: the Plateau de Lannemezan and the hills of the Baronnies, with two networks of rivers: the so-called « Gasconne » rivers (Baïses, Gers, Save…), tributaries of the Garonne, and the Arros, a tributary of the Adour. However it reveals a common identity, it was for a long time a country of moors: moors of the Croupes des Baronnies, vast moors of the Plateau, the « moor of Boc », a meeting place for witches it was said. The canton is rich in a shared history around the prehistoric mounds, the Château de Mauvezin with Gaston Fébus, the Abbey of l’Escaladieu, or the « Bastide » of Lannemezan which will organize the territory. A traditional life with its common practices such as pig peeling, threshing, etc., its fairs and markets in Lannemezan, Bourg-Bigorre and Capvern les Bains form the basis of its rural culture. But the canton has followed the course of modernization with the industrialization of the capital, the establishment of scientific activities in Campistrous, the development of hydrotherapy in Capvern, etc… Ancient and current texts offer an unfinished walk in this canton to discover and enjoy.
