Henri Cazalis, born in Cormeilles-en-Parisis (Val-d’Oise) THE 9 Mars 1840 and died at Geneva (Swiss) THE 1er July 1909, is a doctor And poet symbolist French. He is known under the pseudonym John Caselli and, above all, Jean Lahor.
Respected doctor, his patients Maupassant And Verlaine.
Poet symbolist attracted by images of death, he combined literature and a medical career. A eugenicist, he spoke out in his work entitled « Science and marriage » for the adoption of a law which would prohibit people suffering from a hereditary disease from marrying.
Nicknamed “the Hindu of Contemporary Parnassus» (in view of his penchant for oriental thought and mysticism), he frequents the Parnassians, binds with Mallarmé and form with Sully-Prudhomme the Society for the Protection of Landscapes and Aesthetics of France.
He is best known for his collections of poetry The Book of Nothingness And The Illusion.
L’French Academy awards him the Archon-Desperouses price in 1889 and the Vitet price in 1900. He is buried at Ferney-Voltaire
